Who suffers from Anxiety?

Anxiety is a condition which inevitably effects everyone at some point throughout their lives. We have many stressful situations through life; school, university, work pressures, family, partners, social obligations/commitments, etc which can often leave us with feelings of anxiety owing to the stresses and conflicts of life.

Mild anxiety in itself is not always harmful and can aid in making a person more alert and focused on any immediate threats and/or challenges, which is obviously useful. However, when this anxiety becomes persistent or becomes too much it becomes unhealthy and can effect normal daily life.

Unfortunately whilst feelings of anxiety and anxiety itself are quite often concealed by the sufferer it is a widespread disorder, and is quite often suffered in silence. As such it is not surprising to find that many people do suffer from anxiety including some you would never suspect (e.g. Kim Basinger, Barbara Streisand) and more often than not they will not talk about it or admit they have been suffering for a long time in silence.

In the United States it is estimated 18.1% of the adult population sufferers anxiety or panic disorders. It is also twice as common in females as it is in men. In addition many cases begin in adolescence with the average age of onset being 11 years of age!
